Job Description
DMI is a respected engineering consulting firm that focuses on energy efficiency in large commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings throughout New England. We help building owners and design professionals make informed decisions about the energy performance of existing buildings as well as new construction. As an independent, third party consultant, we make our recommendations based solely on the results of our analyses, instead of trying to sell a particular product or solution. We are seeking qualified project engineers to join our team of talented professionals.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
#
Project Engineers will have a background that includes the fundamentals of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics. We will help you build upon that foundation through varied project assignments. These will include field work gathering data about building operations, analysis of the data using a variety of energy modeling techniques, and writing detailed technical reports that present the findings and recommendations to the client.

We work on a wide variety of building types, including labs, data centers, hospitals, universities, municipal buildings, ice rinks/cold storage, indoor agriculture, and other industrial processes. Project types vary significantly at DMI. Engineers may become experts in certain areas more quickly than others, but the distribution of project and facility types is not limited to one particular building type or analysis methodology. All engineers are encouraged to branch out and learn new skills and analysis techniques pertaining to areas such as HVAC, refrigeration, industrial process, or controls. This gives each engineer the capability to handle a complete range of project types including eQuest energy modeling, energy efficiency opportunity scoping at existing facilities, technical analysis of individual measures, commissioning, and more.

Staff generally divide their time between our Needham office, at customer locations in the field, and working remotely. Field locations are within an hour or two of Boston, so overnight travel is exceedingly rare. Our office is convenient to Route 95/128 and the Mass Pike. Local amenities within walking distance include the Needham Junction commuter rail station, the MBTA's 59 bus route, a grocery store, restaurants, and more.
Qualifications
#
All project engineers will have a BS or MS-level engineering degree, with the majority being mechanical engineers. Since our staff members are expected to contribute to all aspects of a project (from client outreach to analysis to report writing and presentation), well-developed skills in the areas of data collection, detailed analysis, technical writing, and verbal communication are necessary.

Applicants that have already passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam are preferred, as it is a mandatory step in the process of becoming a licensed Professional Engineer. As the project engineers gain experience and skills, they will be given the opportunity to advance into project management and principal level roles.

We are open to applicants who are about to or have recently graduated (especially with co-op or internship experience) as well as those with 1-5 years of experience in a related position.
Benefits
#
Salary is competitive and based on experience. Benefits include a generous 401k plan with matching, flexible spending account, health and dental insurance, and profit sharing. DMI covers the employee share of the Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave benefit program. Paid time off includes sick, vacation and holidays. A subsidized transit pass is available for those who take advantage of our proximity to the T. We have adopted a hybrid remote/in-person work environment so that staff can adjust their schedules as needed.

Co-op Opportunities

Through its co-op program, DMI enhances the educational experience of students seeking to enter the professional field of engineering. DMI has a decades-long partnership with Northeastern University and provides invaluable learning opportunities to its students; DMI also accepts co-op applications from engineering students from other schools across the country. Co-ops must be able to complete a six month in-person internship period; sessions run from January-June and July-December.
DMI commits to training and working with one to two co-ops per term.
